Type: 5. Frequency — The term legal subdivision is a Canadianism by virtue of frequency. While it is used in other countries, it is most commonly used in Canada (see Charts 1 & 2).
The term is listed in COD-2, s.v. "subdivision (def. 1)", as "N Amer. & Austral. an area of land divided into plots for sale or development."; in CCD-2010, s.v. "subdivision (def. 1 & 2)", labelled as US & Canad and described as "a tract of land for building resulting from subdividing land" and "Canad described as a housing development built on such a tract". It is also included in Gage-5, CGCPD-2006, FWSCD-82 and ITP Nelson.
The term is not included in OED-3 or EDD.
The term is included in W-2 and W-3 but not in Merriam-Webster Unabridged or DARE.

Legal subdivisions (LSD): In some situations, such as when a river or road runs through a section or quarter section, a section may be divided into 16 legal subdivisions. A legal land description does not always include a legal subdivision.
